| Meet our Assisting Clergy
Deacon Terry Garner is usually noticed first by his laugh and then by his smile. Those are fueled by the joy of finding Jesus Christ in others, particularly our younger Christians. When Deacon Terry was a young person himself, he first found Christ in a parish youth group, in the eyes and hearts of the spirit-filled adult leaders and kids. God gave Terry those same gifts, and began calling him to that same ministry, even then. A more recent focus of ministry has been with our worship music group, Joyful Noise, where he plays guitar and sings.

Deacon Terry is a vocational deacon, meaning that he has discerned a calling to the servant ministry of the diaconate and is not pursuing the priesthood. He came to Milwaukee from Kentucky in 1977 for a job at Mt. Sinai Hospital and moved into the former YMCA (now a Marquette University dorm) right next door to St. James Church. One day he walked east on the Avenue instead of west, found St. James and has never left. To his joy, the people of St. James affirmed his call to the diaconate, and raised him up to ordination on October 18, 1986.
Deacon Terry knows a lot about kind and caring hearts, but he also knows a lot about... hearts. Terry's secular vocation is in the field of diagnostic cardiology. Currently as VP of Sales & Marketing for a medical imaging equipment manufacturer, he travels extensively, working with physicians and technologists as a lecturer and educator. Terry and his wife, Loraine, live in Mequon with their dog and two cats.
Deacon
Emeritus Ned Howe was actively involved as a layman in all phases of parish life prior to his ordination 22 years ago. He brings a 10-year background in alcohol and drug abuse counseling and an unwavering commitment to serving and working with the homeless to his ministry at St. James'. On a typical morning Deacon Ned can be found dispensing food, coffee, comfort and wisdom to the guests (and sometimes the workers!) at The Gathering, a meal program headquartered in the lower level of the church.
